Is something missing?
Way back in the 1990’s skateboarders were pirates. In my opinion, Steve Rocco was in some respect the pirate king as he plundered other companies of their rosters, their ads, copying and tweaking board graphics from major rivals (Powell Peralta being a prime example) and gathering cease and desist orders left right and centre from MASSIVE corporations.
Where are we now? The age of the “Colab” (interestingly autocorrect attempted to change that to colon!?) Santa Cruz buddying up with The Simpsons/ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Almost signing contracts with Hannah Barbera. All legitimate deals made with legitimate companies, a great way to appeal to a wider audience. This does, however, make me long for the “do it yourself” “punk rock” attitude that attracted me to skating in the first place. Have we.....grown up? God I hope not!
Here’s to the kids growing up into this culture of beyond PC niceties who can spot a chink in its armour and rebel. Good luck kids, more power to you x
